From beneath the duckweed covered water a common frog pokes its nose up for a breath of fresh air. The prominent eyes with their limpid black pupils and fine golden irises are perched high on the head. Like birds, frogs possess a nictating membrane - a protective semi- transparent membrane, especially useful for misjudged leaps.
